Exercise raises your heart rate and pumps blood, similarly the body responds to sexual stimulation and when we are aroused. And as foreplay, the more intense the buildup, the greater the reward.
“More intense exercise, such as a HIIT workout, can release the happy hormone known as endorphins,” says Jenny Skyler, PhD, a certified sex therapist. “When we feel happy, our stress can take a break, creating space for excitement (and horny).”
Of course, we all have different ideas about what “intense exercise” looks like for us. But whenever you are performing at your maximum effort you can classify a workout as high intensity. “It means your heart rate is high enough and it takes a long time to release those endorphins – you’ll know you’re there whenever you feel good,” says Dr. Skyler.
And when you’re feeling better after a workout, you may also feel horny, especially if you’re close to other sweaty, endorphin-riding people or your partner. Here are some reasons why.
Working affects our hormones
Exercise can help increase testosterone levels, which can lead to more arousal, especially for men, says Dr. Skyler. In the long run, lifting heavy weights increases muscle mass, which triggers the body to make more testosterone, and maintaining your weight through exercise is known to protect testosterone levels from drowning. HIIT workouts have also been shown to increase this sex hormone. “Because the hormone testosterone is directly related to horny feelings, increasing testosterone with exercise can change the game,” said Dr. Skyler.

There is also something to be said for leaving the gym knowing that having a strong body can make sex more satisfying.
For example, low-energy work of the body targeting muscles such as the core, hamstrings, and ankles benefits your pelvic floor – and more energy from those pelvic muscles can increase the quality and intensity of orgasm. According to Skyler 6
Meanwhile, “upper body strength exercises, such as those that work the chest, back, biceps, and triceps, can help you hold yourself up more easily in certain positions, or even for missionaries when at the top,” he says.
And of course, greater flexibility allows you to be more agile to try new positions, while better cardiovascular endurance allows you to continue. “Most exercises generally increase stamina, helping the person to stay there longer without too much effort,” says Dr. Skyler.
