Diagnosing a prediabetes can be a catalyst for a healthier life

FOr Helen Hopkins, 42, it all started with feeling sick. “I had pins and needles in my legs and arms, gained weight and was usually lazy,” she recalls. After seeing his doctor, he was shocked to learn that he was prediabetic. “I knew something was wrong but couldn’t fully believe the diagnosis,” he says.

Hopkins is among the millions of people living with diabetes or prediabetes. With the rate of diagnoses rising worldwide, most experts point to a sedentary lifestyle, cheap and readily available food and lack of time to exercise. In Hopkins’ case, his daily routine really affected his health. “I grew up with the idea that the three Cs- cola, cake and carbohydrates would help boost energy,” she says. “So whenever I was tired or stressed, and often I reached out for sugar.”

Changing her diet was one obstacle, but finding time to exercise was another. Exercise plays an important role in diabetes management; It regulates blood glucose by lowering insulin resistance, blood pressure and cholesterol. But between running his own business and caring for a young family, Hopkins struggled to find time to be active. However, the diagnosis of prediabetes inspired him to find an enjoyable activity that he could maintain. Following his doctor’s instructions, he began to walk: first running to school, then taking extra steps until he began to feel the benefits.

“Soon I was walking a crazy distance,” he says “I found that my mental health as well as my fitness has improved tremendously. As a super-thinker, walking gives me a place to be just me.” He is now completing an ultra walker, 50km event and 100km ultra training. “I think the diagnosis of prediabetic was a gift. Being fitter and healthier gave me clarity, “she says.” I even started my own wellness business when I realized that there were many more people in the same situation whom I could help. “

For diabetic or prediabetic people like Hopkins, creating a fitness routine is easier when selected activities are enjoyable. These may include walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing or even gardening. She has type 1 diabetes, an innate insulin-dependent diabetes, and she says exercise is the key to managing diabetes. “People come back to me as people living in the same situation,” he says “Together we find ways to break down exercise barriers and gradually develop a new mindset to take better care of ourselves – physically and mentally.”

Anyone diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 disease should check with a doctor before starting a fitness plan; It is important to know how to manage potential glucose level fluctuations. But once cleared, there are various ways that fitness activities can help health, and at certain times of the day when exercise can be most beneficial. For example, exercising after meals provides much more glucose control and stability than rest. Resistance exercises – body weight, resistance bands and light free weights – as well as aerobic exercise are important. The heart is a muscle that needs to work, so moderate to vigorous activity for 30 minutes per day is ideal.
