Heart broken? Try this yoga for heart break routine

H.Eartbreak can be such an out-of-body experience. I remember being the most heartbroken I went to the National History Museum in New York and walked around the halls listening to Frank Ocean. I was new to town and was crushed after a woman politely disappointed me. I was so crushed that she didn’t want me the way I wanted her to as I lay under the blue whale and thought I could be a cracked open egg. Lying on my back, looking at the whale, and hearing the whispers of all the people, I knew I would pass it. I did. Those days, though, are still very clearly there.

If you resonate with it, you are not alone. Heart pain is excruciating (sometimes physically). And sometimes, to help release these heavy emotions, which can be stored in the body, people go back to yoga after a breakup. There are some heart-breaking exercises with BK Yoga Club coach Alicia Ferguson in this latest episode of Good Moves — stay tuned if it sounds like a welcome.

There’s plenty of room for your feelings in this session, which Ferguson started by inviting you to ground yourself in the present moment. After that, he guides you to set an intention for this routine, and encourages you to have confidence in your decisions, to have confidence in giving up, and to be patient with yourself so that they manifest as they wish. After that, you breathe in and repeat your purpose, perhaps “believing” it, for example, and when you exhale, you remind yourself that you are safe in your body, and that hard feelings don’t let go of it.

The seats included in the video are meant to open the heart physically and spiritually. Throughout the flow, Ferguson performs yoga poses that will make you feel as strong and powerful as a fighter’s posture, as well as ones that will literally tell you to sit on your senses, such as in a chair. There is also a gentle backband because tension can build up in the chest, neck and upper body muscles when you are going through something challenging.

Ferguson constantly invites you to take a deep breath and check-in with yourself. Spending time alone can be difficult, especially after losing someone you care about. Remember that your relationship with you is still there and waiting for you to survive even in the worst of heartbreaks.
