By “someone else” we mean your dog, to be clear. And if you’ve recently become a pet guard (or want to pay a little more attention to your current dog’s health), the idea of creating a daily wellness routine for your dog may seem a bit daunting.
It doesn’t have to be this way if you get some advice from Tracy Copeland, the trainer and movement trainer who got her first dog (a tiny poodle called Brooklyn) about a year ago. After initially having a cat, a puppy was a new territory for her and her husband, so she wanted to do whatever she could to make sure her new hairy BFF’s health tip was in top shape.
“I wanted to make sure she was eating well, eating healthy, walking a lot, having plenty of play time, dressing up, you named it,” Copeland said. It wasn’t easy at first, but once they found a wellness routine that worked for both of them, they fell into a rhythm that was really fruitful.

1. Stay consistent
Just as consistency is key to people trying to develop healthy habits, dog-friendly fitness routines also improve on consistency.
“Dogs and puppies need structure – it’s part of their natural development,” Copeland said. “Brooklyn is a habitual animal. She understands when it’s time to wake up, when to sleep, and she always reminds me when it’s time to play, even when I don’t like it. Coat, then it’s time to go out. “
To that end, Copeland recommends setting a schedule for feeding, walking and playing directly from the bat – so that your dog’s healthy routine begins early.
2. Prioritize nutrition
For Copeland, choosing nutritious food has become an automatic way of life – and he tried to apply the same principle to the Brooklyn diet. “Eating healthy … fuels my workouts and my mental well-being,” Copeland says. “Anyone who has worked in health and wellness as an instructor and yoga instructor and anyone who enjoys running and dancing, I want food that will hold me up and give me strength all day long.”
Brooklyn has a similar love of movement (“she can jump really high for a little dog and surpass every dog in the dog park,” says her proud mother) so she needs a diet that supports her strength and muscle and joint health. “[Brooklyn] Eats too much so I wasn’t sure how she would react initially, “says Copeland.” But whenever I opened the package, she was crying and whispering as if she was hungry – she was excited! I immediately put something in her bowl to try, and she just started to creep into it. “

3. Remember everyone needs time to play
You know that feeling when you’re sitting at your desk all day, and you’re suddenly counting the minutes until you can go out and do something? Dogs get the same feeling.
“Puppies are a good reminder that we all have to go out and play,” Copeland said. “No one wants to get in. Hurry, [Brooklyn] The zoomies will get (energy that waves where they just go and go). It’s very common between puppies and puppies, but I’ve read that it can be caused by excess energy, which means I probably didn’t play or walk enough with it. “
Once he identified the need for exercise in Brooklyn, he was able to add it to their daily routine. Now, they do at least two 20-minute walks a day, take a “play break” all day to throw a ball or work on commands, go to the dog park to play with other dogs, and sometimes even do yoga together.
