If you’ve ever wondered if exercise releases endorphins, look to Andrea Rogers and you’ll be sure quickly.
He is a powerhouse of positive energy and the brilliant creator of exciting workouts, Xtend Barre and XB Pilates, two programs available to stream BeachBody on Demand!
We contacted Andrea to learn more about the mastermind behind many favorite barre-inspired workouts.
Beach: You have made Xtend Barre a successful global brand. But, let’s back up a bit for a moment. How did you get into fitness?
Andrea: The movement has occupied a special place in my life since childhood. I started dancing at the age of three, teaching at the age of 12, creating choreography at the age of 15 and dancing professionally at the age of 17.
I graduated with a college degree in communication, majoring in liberal arts and dance, but struggled to find my place in the “corporate world”. I was missing a creative element and wanted to get back to my passion for movement, so I got back to a career in Pilates.
Was Pilates New to You??
No, as a dancer, I have always practiced Pilates, and I have taken classes with mats and equipment to keep myself muscular and healthy. I have also studied the complete classic Pilates programs.
This is what allowed me to develop my passion for the scientific method of movement. Thanks to Pilates, I got a natural career choice outside of professional dance.
How Pilates education led you to create Xtend Barre?
After three years of teaching Pilates, I miss dancing and choreography. I was teaching at a Pilates studio in South Florida and suggested the owner add a bar class, which was really popular only in New York at the time.
He quickly gave me the green light, and I selfishly, a fun program that started a class without any purpose other than a great training program.
People really accepted it and within a few weeks we had classes on the waiting list. Xtend Barre evolved spontaneously from there.
In terms of your own fitness, do you mainly do Bayer exercises and Pilates??
Although Xtend Barre and Pilates classes are part of my routine, I travel often. When I travel, I like to go to the new gym and try what is available.
I want to try all kinds of disciplines from Pilates to yoga, HIIT classes and boxing: that’s the discipline I want to try.
When you’re not traveling, what do you like to do to have fun?
Ah, when it comes to integrating entertainment into my daily life, I need to improve! It’s hard because I travel a lot for my work and I’m a single mom of two daughters when I’m at home.
My hobbies are often centered around them and our favorite activities are instantly dancing parties and listening to music in our living room.
Includes how you eat in your routine?
Absolutely. I usually start my day by eating eggs and an avocado.
Mid-morning and mid-afternoon, I’m always with high-protein shakes. It’s always a chocolate drink, because that’s what I crave the most.
For lunch, I have a salad mixed with some kind of protein: fish, chicken or even steak.
For dinner, I usually choose vegetable and protein based foods. I try to limit my carbohydrates for healthier alternatives.
Looks like you’re eating very healthy. You don’t make dietary differences?
As a child, I loved sweets, but as a teenager, after realizing the negative effects of sugar on my body related to my dance career goals, I dropped sugar.
At that time everything in my body had changed for the better.
However, I still have a fondness for sweets and I love chocolate.
So when the craving for sugar increases, I add nuts or chocolate pea drinks to my high-protein shake and occasionally add a banana to help me satisfy my sweet teeth.
With so many projects and activities, how do you balance a healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule?
Honestly, I sometimes think the word “balance” is rubbish. It’s not really that easy.
Like everyone else, I have days when I feel invincible, and others when I need a little more support.
Life is full of moments of success and failure, but I never let failure shake my resolve. It just encourages me to do better, learn more and be stronger.
To find balance in more chaotic days, I focus on one goal. It can be as simple as a goal for those hours or a list of goals for the day.
For me, having a clear vision of what I want to do and giving everything I have to make sure I can check that box and get it done.
How do you stay purposeful?
For my business, it’s not hard because I love my job. I don’t need to try to inspire myself because I’m just excited when I wake up and I can’t wait for the day to start.
It always helps me to have a very optimistic attitude in life.
And then, I have two little girls who always encourage me to go further. I believe that the joy of survival begins with a state of mind.
I try to start each day with gratitude, then set my purpose or goal for the day. There is so much stress in life that it is easy to lose sight of all the small victories that pave the way for our dreams.
Do you have the same spontaneous motivation for your personal fitness?
Movement and music have always played a huge role in my life and can change my mood drastically.
When I’m not motivated to exercise, I just put in some good music and I start moving spontaneously. You need to find the little things that you want to move. For me, it was always music.
I just know I have to move my body, and not necessarily for long. Thirty minutes is enough for me to feel better than when I started the workout.
Between your business and your daughters, you have many responsibilities. How do you deal with stress?
I am very attached to the declaration of intent. Just as food is a powerful tool for nutrition, mental exercise is a powerful tool for wellness.
Twice a day, once when I wake up and once when I go to sleep, I take a positive attitude and review my goals using a statement from a vision app and purpose app.
They help me stay on track and reset my goals when walking becomes difficult.
One last question: What is one thing that will surprise others to know about you?
It’s simple: I am a real professional in assembling IKEA furniture!
